The Glorious Flight
While working through the Flight Unit Study, we decided to work in a Five in a Row unit,The Glorious Flight, focusing on Louis Bleriot.
Field Trip!
We visited a small local airport with our co-op friends. The pilot did a great job with the kids and answered all of our questions about his job and his plane.

Learning about Roman Numerals

Elijah wrote, "He was the first to fly across the sea. (1909) He did not give up."

Elijah loved the descriptive writing lesson. The inside of the book says…
it is very tasty
shaped like a big chocolate chip
silver wrapper
sweet and smooth
Can you guess what he was describing?
The count to ten in French printable is from Enchanted Learning.

The flag of France book is a graduated book that has two sections

Fun times with The Glorious Flight!
Pat-a-Cake Scones
Simon and I made some pat-a-cake scones for tea-time yesterday! They are easy and fun and yummy!
Pat-a-Cake Scones
1 1/2 cups self rising flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup heavy whipping cream
colored sugar
Preheat oven to 375
Combine flour and sugar. Make a well in the center of the flour. Add cream. Stir till mixed well. Coat hands with flour. Knead a few times. Start singing Pat-a-Cake. (We sang it a few times!) Pat out flat. Cut into triangle or circle shapes. Sprinkle colored sugar on top. Bake 18 min. or until golden.
Tea-Time ~ Alice in Wonderland Style
I just realized that it has been weeks (months!) since I posted a tea-time post.
Here are a few shots of our Alice in Wonderland Tea-Time complete with "drink me" juice, "eat me" cookies, and Lewis Carroll poetry.
Tea-time has been great for me and my boys. It stops the normal hubub and replaces it with something slower, something meaningful. It is a great relationship-builder and memory-maker.
Happy Tea-Times!

Our Lammy!
Here is Elijah working on our Lamington.
Here he is ready for tea-time (Yes! He is STILL in his pajamas!)
The purpose of tea-time is to work on manners…do you think I’m succeeding?
Oh, and if you are wondering what a Lamington is, it’s an Australian treat! Here is an authentic recipe (ours is OH-so-fake but at least I’m making some memories!).
Would you like a cup of tea?
We started our tea-time tradition last Wednesday followed by our second round this week. Elijah was so excited. He handed me this note in the early morning (a subtle hint):
We had Apple Cake and Vanilla Chai for our tummies and fed our minds with Here’s a Little Poem.
Tea-time lasted a lot longer than I thought it would. Both boys want me to keep reading poetry! This week we had a simple snack of apples and peanut butter caramel dip with Hot Cocoa (by request). I read from Now We are Six. Simon screamed when I stopped reading. I guess he enjoys Pooh Poetry. What a nice break in our week. Just a time to sit and share together and eat a yummy snack that wouldn’t otherwise be served. I like having tea-time just once a week to give us something to really look forward to doing together. If you have boys, and you think tea-time would NEVER go over. Well, let me tell you, it WILL. What child can resist a sweet treat topped with mom’s undivided attention? Try tea time. You won’t be sorry.
Tea-Time
"Come along inside…
We’ll see if tea and buns
can make the world a better place."
-The Wind in the Willows
And, so…we’ve decided to try it for ourselves. To have some tea and buns each day and to see if it makes our world a better place (we are quite certain that it will!). I haven’t decided when our big debut will be, but I am busy getting things ready.
So far, I’ve decided..
1. Tea time will be at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
2. It will be a time to listen to music.
3. It will be a time to read poetry.
4. It will be a time to learn manners.
I’ve compiled some "tea" recipes that I want to share. These are from various blogs, recipe websites, tea websites, and children’s websites. I altered many of them (de-spiced them, you may say), so that they will be more palatable for children.
Stay tuned for a file with easy tea snacks…that’s my next venture. Until then…
I’m editing (9/7/07) to add this file of Autumn Tea Treats. I am so sorry that they aren’t necessarily easy, but you may want to give them a try anyway!
