Process Art: Sand Pictures

March 18, 2009 by Ami Leave a Comment

This two-year-old toddler of mine! He insists on doing school just like big brother.

Sometimes I put him in a tub of rice and beans.

Other times I give him a stack of books.

We might even have regularly scheduled whine time.

But I have moments where I try a maybe-might-work idea, and it keeps him busy and happy and learning (insert triumphant music and high fives here, please).

Last week we had some sand leftover from one of our homeschool co-op projects. After whine-time, I threw a maybe-might-work idea on Simon's table.

Insert busy and happy and learning. Five days in a row Simon has enjoyed Sand Process Art. The idea is simple, but I think worth sharing. If may even transform your whining toddler into a happy little student. You never know.

Sand Picture Supplies

  • paintbrush
  • watered down glue on a paint palette
our palette is just a rubbermaid lid
  • colored sand in shakers (we use 2-5 colors per project)
  • construction paper

Process Art Sand Pictures--a great way to keep your toddler or preschooler busy, happy, and learning! from Walking by the Way blog

Sand Picture Instructions

1. Child chooses a piece of paper.

2. Give the child the glue and a paintbrush.

3. Tell him he can paint the glue on a spot where he wants to add sand.

4. Show him how to use a sand shaker and shake the sand on the glue spot. I had my son shake the excess onto a file folder so I could recycle the sand.

5. Show him how to shake off the extra sand.

6. Repeat and repeat and repeat until finished.
