Seven Silly Eaters & Mrs. Peters’ Cake

July 8, 2013 by Ami 3 Comments

Seven Silly Eaters is the rhyming tale of seven picky Peters children who each have one, and only one, food they will eat: warm milk, pink lemonade, applesauce, oatmeal (with no lumps!), poached eggs, fried eggs, and bread. Mrs. Peters happily complies with their demands in the first part of the story, but as the years go by, she starts to wear out.

On the night before her birthday, the children decide to make her a breakfast which includes all their favorite foods. Things get a little crazy in the kitchen and before you know it, everything is mixed up in one big pot and put in the hot oven to hide the mess. In the morning, a pink and plump and pefect cake is revealed. Everyone eats it, and it becomes a Peter household staple (and mom is relieved of her crazy kitchen duties!).

This book, with it's fun-to-read rhythm and rhyme along with hilarious illustrations has been a staple around her for a long time.

To add something special to it, I decided to make Mrs. Peter's Birthday Cake with the boys.

They all take turns in mixing it.
They all take turns in fixing it.
It's thick to beat and quick to bake–
It's fine to eat and fun to make–
It's Mrs. Peters' birthday cake!

I saw some Pink Lemonade cake recipes flying around Pinterest a few months ago, so I decided to try to find one I felt was suitable. (Suitable = no artificial colors, flavors, or corn syrup). I chose this recipe because it uses red raspberries to color the frosting. These little treats definitely taste like lemonade!

Elijah helped with the cake preparation by squeezing each lemon to its rind.

He mixed it and fixed it.

It was fine to eat and quick to bake!

And we enjoyed Mrs. Peters birthday cake while reading one of our old favorites.

How fun!  We love that book and baking, so my kids would love to do this.
