Rainbow Puzzle Collage Story Art

Project Inspiration: The Art of Education

Rainbows! Rainbows are beautiful to look at and super fun to paint. Enjoy reading about and creating a rainbow.

Art and Literature Connection

You can read the classic tale, A Rainbow of My Own, by Don Freeman before you start your art. This book will spark conversations about rainbows and colors. Once you are done reading and discussing, your child can make a rainbow of his own!

Rainbow Puzzle Collage Supplies (A Rainbow of My Own)

Project Supplies

  • Prang watercolors
  • piece of quality 11×15 watercolor paper (90 lb. or better)
  • cup of water (replace with new when it gets really murky)
  • scissors
  • pencil
  • glue
  • piece of large 12×18 black construction paper

Project Steps

1. Rainbow a piece of watercolor paper using Prang watercolors.

Tips:

Use Prang for bright, beautiful colors.

Pop the brown and black out and put them out of reach.

Teach your child how to clean her brush between using each paint color.

Set crayons on the table in ROYGBIV order to help the painter follow the pattern.

2. Let it dry completely.

3. Show your child different kinds of lines. I demonstrated on large scrap of paper. I made bumpy, wavy, zig-zag, straight, and other kinds of lines. Show your child how to start at the tippy top of the paper with the pencil and to move it all the way to the bottom.

4. Let your child make lines.

5. Cut the paper apart using the lines as a guide.

6. Reassemble the paper pieces on the black paper (like a puzzle!). Glue them down.

7. Parent can trim around the paper to make it even, if desired.
