Parallel Construction

August 23, 2007 by ami 3 Comments

One of our lessons for Salamander Room was on Parallel Construction (in writing). I hesitated to teach this to my five year old, but then the word construction kept rolling around in my head, and I thought of a way to relay the concept…MEGABLOCKS (thanks so much Brian, they come in handy!).

I taped the phrases from the story to the blocks making sure that the phrases that matched were on similar blocks. I demonstrated how the conversation between the mother and son was balanced as I built the blocks up. After I was done, both sides were the same and we had a (drum roll, please) parallel construction! Elijah has rebuilt the towers over and over again this week and read the words on the blocks. He may not fully understand, but we're building (hee hee) a foundation!

    Wow! What a neat visual!

And to think I skipped that lesson when we did Salamander Room! Hmmm, sounds like we need a re-row!
