Workbox Reading

September 24, 2009 by Ami 5 Comments

I have a serious reader on my hands; the only problem is that he wants to read the same genre 90% of the time– mystery books.  I decided that I would fill a workbox with books.  Some of the books are books he wants to read; some of the books are books I want him to read.  He chooses one book each day to read, and he can choose in ANY order he wants, but I’m not refilling the box until it’s empty.    Completely empty.

So, this is one box I only have to fill once per week!   Works for me!  🙂

Can I bother you by asking what books are in the box? I can only make out a few of them. What other books is Elijah reading these days? I am having a hard time keeping up with Parker and all the books he reads. I think he would spend 90% of the day reading if given the choice 🙂 He is definitely a re-reader thank goodness. But he loves to also read new books.

Some of those look like big books – he must really love to read (which is so great!). I remember loving mysteries too and only reading those. I think that’s probably pretty common for kids. And just having that love of reading eventually will lead them to read other genres too! Great idea to have a bunch for him to pick in the workbox! Does he have other books too (in his room or wherever?)

You aren’t bothering me, Jocelyn. 🙂

    Let’s see…
~Childhood of Famous Americans (2-Buffalo Bill & John Glenn)- Elijah has REALLY enjoyed this series. He’s read Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Milton Hershey, Pocahontas, Harry Houdini, Amelia Earhart, The Wright Brothers, and more. I really like it for younger, voracious readers!
    ~Encyclopedia Brown books (2)
    ~Bobbsey Twin books (2)
~Red Rock Mystery #1 (this is a new series that another homeschooling mom recommended to me)

The next book box will look like this:
~Childhood of Famous Americans: Thomas Edison and one more
    ~Owls in the Family
    ~The Backward Bird Dog
    ~A Llama in the Family
    ~The Adventures of Reddy Fox
    ~a few old favorites

    🙂

    Hi Nicole,

He would read all day if I would let him. I think his idea of a perfect day is read a book, play Legos, eat, & repeat.

He has books everywhere including a stash in his bed. It kind of drives me mad. 😉
