Workboxes!

March 8, 2009 by Ami Leave a Comment

Okay, I am a wee bit (opposite of hyperbole) excited about Sue Patrick’s Workbox System!    I purchased the e-book on Friday, and I am starting tomorrow!

Elijah needs more structure than I offer.   This system will really help me to provide the stable boundries that he craves.

Most schedule type systems don’t appeal to me because I am a very random kind of person.  I don’t do much of anything in order, and I am extremely distractable.  I forget things.  I lose things.  I drove my elementary teachers nutty (and a few even told me so!).    But this system appeals to me.  Not only will it provide some structure, it also keeps things fresh and fun!  I can vary things day-to-day with very little effort.   I have a bazillion other good reasons for doing this, but I will have to wait to share them all!

Here is a picture of our new schooling system.  One cart.  Twelve boxes.

So, what’s in the boxes for our first day?

#1- Draw Write Now book, paper, colored pencils, and pencil
#2- Pablo Picasso Artist Study
#3- All About Spelling
#4- Desert Animals Unit Study stuff including one book for me to read to Elijah, one book for him to read to me, a scorpion stained-glass picture to color, and three mini-books to work on
#5- Bible Memory Cross Card and timer
#6- Bible to read (post-it with page numbers)
#7- Money Lapbook to review
#8- Mad Libs Jr. (choose one to complete)
#9- Tangram Puzzles
#10- Rightstart Math (with mom)
#11- Number Writing Practice Strip, pencil
#12- Quadrilateral Sorting, scissors to cut cards apart

What did I need to set up?
~Sue’s book
~12 plastic shoeboxes (Target had for $1 a pop)
~1 cart (Target in an orange box in the laundry area for $15)
~velcro dots
~laminated forms (free downloads with book purchase) including numbers, a strip schedule, work with mom cards, I need help cards, and more
~a ring (for the strip schedule)
~post-it notes (to add directions to certain boxes – you can see my yellow post-its in the piccture)
~a timer (more on this later; I made up some clock cards I will share in another blog post, too)

I’ve also made a list of box ideas.  That will be yet another blog post this week.  Stay tuned!

Oh, and if you want to see other Workbox Systems in action…
