Andrew Lang & Fairy Books

March 1, 2013 by Ami 7 Comments

iHomeschool Network is celebrating March birthdays this month!

Who was Andrew Lang?

What did he do?

He is famous {at least in our home} for his fairy books:

adventure
              knights
                       thieves
                               dragons
                                       princesses
                                                  magicians
                                                             imagination

–these are the fairy books filled with tales compiled by Andrew Lang. My boys enjoy these stories which include a little more, um, violence and gore than the fluffy tales most books tell. And, despite the big boy appeal, these books are filled with lessons in truth, goodness, hope, honesty, and beauty. These stories take us to a place where good triumphs over evil and are worth reading and discussing.

To celebrate Lang's birthday, I'm offering a few printables to use with his books.

Elijah insisted that I add this disclaimer: I've allowed my children to enjoy Lang's fairy stories with just a simple discussion or narration, and I would encourage you to do something similar. Please use the notebooking pages for a special project or a once-in-awhile activity but not for every single story.

You can click on the image to claim your free set.

Most of Lang's books are offered for free for your e-reader. You can find them at Amazon or through The Gutenberg Project. You can also find the good old-fashioned kind at Amazon {see links below}:

The Red Fairy Book

The Blue Fairy Book

The Orange Fairy Book

The Green Fairy Book

The Grey Fairy Book {Elijah's favorite}

The Olive Fairy Book

The Crimson Fairy Book

The Pink Fairy Book

The Lilac Fairy Book

The Violet Fairy Book

The Yellow Fairy Book

Awesome! My daughter found The Green Fairy Book on our shelves a few weeks ago & has fallen in love. We’ve been reading The Blue Fairy Book off the Kindle for PC, but she’s like her mom & loves a good book in hand. 🙂 Thank you!

Thank you for introducing me to Andrew Lang’s Fairy books, they look wonderful. I was wondering if you still Delight Directed Homeschooling? I recently found your blog and have been reading it a lot but realized that the dd posts were from a couple of years ago. I am curious to see how this way of homeschooling works as the children get older and if you can give me any more information on your experience. Thank you so much.
