E for Egg

September 22, 2009 by Ami 11 Comments

If you are new to Read to Me & ABC, please start here.

Read to Me

Our main book of the week wasn't a book– it was a nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty.  We also read lots of other nursery rhymes from the Random House book, but Humpty Dumpty had the spotlight.

Alphabet Art- Eggshell E

Supplies
E Pattern (I used the large capital E)
glue
eggshells
paint, if desired (we used liquid watercolors)

We made egg salad for lunch.  After lunch, Simon smashed the eggshells, glued them on the E, then painted them.

Lessons & Lapbook

I used the lessons and lapbook from Homeschool Share.  I also used this puzzle from Making Learning Fun.

Simon loves (LOVES) to paint and insists on lots of brushes. I decided to let him paint each E page. He chose a different color for each one.

I rubber-cemented the puzzle to fun foam and then cut it out.  I made a pocket that says, "I can put Humpty Dumpty back together again!"  Simon put a band-aid on the pocket.  šŸ™‚

Let's Make a Memory ~ Coloring Eggs & Egg Hunt!

I don't know why, but I didn't take any pictures of the egg hunt (bummer). We did this outside.  All but one egg was found (good thing we did this OUTSIDE).

Book Basket
First the Egg by Laura Seeger
Chickens Aren't the Only Ones by Ruth Heller
Horton Hatches an Egg by Dr. Seuss
Book of Mother Goose Rhymes

I haven't read these, but you might want to check your library for:
Humpty Dumpty After the Fall by Charles Reasoner
Humpty Dumpty by Daniel Kirk
Humpty Dumpty by Kin Eagle

Shopping List

  • eggs
  • food coloring
  • vinegar
  • paint
  • fun foam (to back the Humpty Dumpty puzzle, if desired)
  • rubber cement

Just a snippet that I always want to remember . . .

On Tuesday I was asking Simon to sing the rhyme for us. Here is Simon's version and Elijah's commentary.

Simon: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great (pauses to think about what comes next) DAY!
Elijah: No, no, no. Humpty Dumpty did not have a great day. He had a HORRIBLE day.

I was cracking up. They are too much fun!
