Mathematical Reasoning ~ TOS Crew Review

April 24, 2012 by Ami 1 Comment

The Basics

Mathematical Reasoning Level F was our first taste of the Critical Thinking Company.

The book includes 413 pages of number operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability; all the answers are provided at the back of the book. Students will encounter activity sheets for various mathematical concepts including: area, capacity, congruence, data analysis, equivalence, fractions, negative numbers, place value, prime numbers, unknown variables, volume, and weight (and so many more).

Level F was created for Grade 5, but the company also offers levels for Kindergarten through Grade 4. Level F retails for $42.99.

How We Used It

My son has had a solid math foundation thanks to our regular math curriculum, and it's usually an enjoyable subject for him. I handed him Mathematical Reasoning and told him to use it as little or as much as he wanted to. He chose to do 4-7 pages each day, and I never once had to ask him to do it.

What I Like

  • the pages are brightly colored and appealing

  • the activities are varied

  • it promotes mathematical thinking

Final Thoughts

This is a fantastic product, but I don't think it includes enough instruction for it to be a stand alone program. It would be a wonderful way to keep math alive during the summer or as a supplement to your regular math program.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of Mathematical Reasoning Level F in exchange for an honest review.

P.S. We had way too much fun with our photo shoot for this one. I can't resist posting a few outtakes!
