Spooning Beads

August 6, 2009 by Ami 8 Comments

This activity is a super simple idea for working on fine motor skills.   Your preschooler simply transfers beads from one bowl to another using a spoon.

Many of you with preschoolers might already do something like this…but you probably don't have it in a bag.   I like having it in the bag, ready to grab & go — no hunting or searching for beads or bowls or spoons!

Supplies Needed

  • beads or beans
  • two shallow bowls and one spoon (I found these adorable ice cream dishes at the Dollar Tree)
  • Ziploc bag to store everything
  • a small container or small Ziploc for the beads, if desired

Simon sat and worked seriously until every bead was in the yellow bowl.

I'm thinking this exercise will help with his cooking skills and give him more control when measuring ingredients.

    AMi-
Can’t wait to try this…we have these bowls also and sam loves doing this. He has done something similar with beads…i am working on a water workbox because that is his favorite thing to transfer from one continer to another! Good idea!

Another awesome idea! I have looked at those little bowls and spoons SO many times at the dollar tree trying to figure out what to do with them. LOL! Great idea!

I don’t think the link to your Frog bag is working:)

Hello! I signed up for a busy bag swap and I really want to make this, but I went to the Dollar Tree today and those bowls aren’t sold anymore (at least I couldn’t find them). Do you have any other economical suggestions for making these? I have to do 19 bags and I’m a little worried that this might get expensive … I’ve never done anything like this before and I’m not particularly crafty, so any suggestions would be helpful! Thank you!! πŸ™‚

    Hi Monique!

I think they are a spring/summer seasonal item. Do they have cheap plastic bowls at the Dollar Tree? I would use those with some plastic spoons. πŸ™‚ Hope that helps! πŸ™‚ Ami

[…] 4. Spooning beads- (I think I just might be brave enough to try with Lil’ Red. He keeps getting into our sugar bowl and grabbing the little spoon!) May start with larger wooden beads from beaded car seat cover that broke. Thanks Walking by the Way. […]
